Ten years ago, a community partnership on behalf of the Atlanta Ballet and General Electric (GE), begin with the operation of a dance program at Maynard Jackson High School (formerly Southside High School).

Over the years, I have worked successfully to advance the arts by actively working with a broad spectrum of parents, students, organizations, colleges, and professional arts organizations. When the Atlanta Ballet dance program initially came to Jackson, there was only (1) other high school with a dance program. Today there are (5) programs offering the dance curriculum at the high school and (3) operating at the middle school levels.

The dance pathway is a community conscious component of the Fine Arts & Media Communications Small Learning Community. We provide an authentic education through the art of dance. Our program encourages students to rigorously investigate dance, develop their imaginations, and create their own artistic voices. Moreover, the dance pathway provides a diverse curriculum including: Ballet levels I-V and IB Dance.

The art of dance not only operates on the highest level of Bloom’s taxonomy and Webb's Depth of Knowledge; but compositional analysis is used to assess student's learning. The creation of student's choreographic works serves as a vivid reflection of their knowledge and comprehension in an authentic and critical manner.
