Ballet 1-​​
This course has physical as well as academic components. It is designed to build and increase the physical strength, flexibility, rhythm, coordination, and body alignment necessary for all dancers. It is also designed to allow students to gain awareness, dance literacy, and an appreciation of the contributions of dance in today's society through studying the history, terminology, styles and techniques, composition, and career opportunities of dance. The National Dance Standards and the Georgia Performance Standards for dance will be used to make every effort to expose students to a variety of dance uses.

In addition to the technical dance aspects, this course serves as an introduction to the creative process through improvisation, self-exploration, group interaction, relating character to the development of thematic and abstract movement invention. Students will examine compositional devices, analyze and create movement composition, observe and critique dance performances, and develop solo and group works for public performances.

This course will include intermediate study of classical ballet and contemporary modern dance techniques. Knowledge, skill, vocabulary and terminology, and an appreciation through daily practice will be examined. Students will become proficient in the following areas: body alignment, centering, kinesthetic awareness, flexibility, and dance literacy. The intermediate level studies prepare the young artist for the Pre-Collegiate level through choreography, and verbal articulation to discuss movement, motifs, phrases, and qualitative nuances. Also the studio work and scholarship opportunities with our business partnerships will further increase technique, creativity and aesthetic understanding in dance technique.

This course will include advanced study of classical ballet and contemporary modern dance techniques. ​IB Dance SL/HL​-
This course is designed to prepare the grade 11 dancer for the IB Dance exams (submissions) their senior year. Students participate in their level appropriate dance technique class, and with IB Dance further explore the elements of Composition, Performance Techniques, and World Dance Studies. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have prepared and performed a solo dance composition and begun work on a second choreographic study. In addition a World Dance area of study will be declared and an abstract of the research project submitted. Emphasis will be placed on examining the culture and identity of the dance makers and performers by observing the climate of ideas, the scale of values, and the socio-political conditions that influenced the development of Western Dance. Through dance classes, lectures, workshop demonstrations, text readings, internet research and performances-live and filmed, students will explore cultural dance as a product of and a link to its society.

MJHS Dance Performance Company​-
Created in 2011 to provide students with an opportunity to perform and express their talents of dance throughout the community. Concert dance is an art of great discipline, poise, and diligence. The company proudly presents works of various dance genres and meets weekly for rehearsal and technique classes. The forty-five member company also performs in annual Fall concert’s and display works from professional choreographers in the Atlanta area. Our prominent dance business partnerships including: The Atlanta Ballet, The Atlanta Dance Connection, AREA (Atlanta’s Resource for Entertainment & the Arts), Dance Canvas, and The D.A.I.R. Project provides workshops, scholarships and choreography to the company.
